GTT nets Zvezda order for five Arc7 LNG carriers

July 6, 2020, by Mirza Duran

France’s GTT has won an order from Russia’s Zvezda shipyard for the tank design of five ARC7 ice-breaking LNG carriers.

The LNG containment specialist said Zvezda awarded the deal at the end of June on behalf of a Russian shipowner.

This represents the first order following the technical assistance and license deal between the duo.

These 172,600-cbm vessels will be able to navigate in ice-covered waters and will serve Novatek’s projects in the Arctic, GTT said.

All of the vessels will feature GTT’s Mark III membrane containment system.

GTT added that delivery of the vessels is scheduled between the first and the fourth quarter of 2023.

The shipowner behind the order is Sovcomflot that formed a shipping venture with Novatek last year to focus on Arctic LNG carriers.

The Russian shipping giant also ordered a pilot LNG carrier for Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project at Zvezda earlier in 2019.

It inked financing deals with Russian financial institution VEB.RF Group for the LNG vessel.

Earlier this year, the Sovcomflot-Novatek venture also secured funds from VEB.RF for four additional Arc7 LNG carriers.

All of these vessels will serve Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project, but also Yamal LNG and other planned projects.

The Arctic 2 project located on the Gydan peninsula includes the construction of three LNG trains.

The trains will have a capacity of 6.6 mtpa, each, using gravity-based structure platforms.

Novatek recently said that the project is about 19 per cent complete, with concrete casting of the first GBS platform about 37 per cent complete.

The Russian company expects to launch the first LNG train in 2023, with trains 2 and 3 to follow in 2024 and 2026, respectively.

Mark III technology is a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure. This technology and its evolutions equip more than 200 vessels in operation and under construction and benefit from more than 50 years’ experience at sea.

The concept

The Mark III membrane system is a containment and insulation system, directly supported by the ship’s hull structure. It is composed of a primary corrugated stainless steel membrane, positioned on top of prefabricated insulation panels, including a complete secondary membrane made of composite material.

This modular system employs standard prefabricated components that can accommodate any shapes and capacities of tanks. They are designed for mass production techniques and easy assembly.

GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) is an engineering company expert in containment systems with cryogenic membranes used to transport and store liquefied gas, in particular LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). For over 50 years, GTT has offered to its customers technologies which allow them to optimize storage space and reduce the construction and operation costs of ships or tanks equipped with these systems. GTT operates in several sectors: LNGCs (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers) and VLECs (Very Large Ethane Carriers), Multi-gas carriers, FLNGs (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas units), FSRUs (Floating Storage and Regasification units), onshore storage tanks and the use of LNG as a fuel. Its expertise and ability to innovate to meet customer requirements and international regulations allow GTT also to propose solutions for the whole LNG chain: use of LNG as a fuel for commercial vessels, distribution by feeder or barge.

As of 2017, the Zvezda shipyard has orders for only 14 vessels, mostly from Rosneft, one of the owners.

In the middle of 2018, the shipyard's order book amounted to 118 vessels, including orders from Rosneft for 26 vessels, 4 vessels are in the process of construction. In September 2018, the first tanker of the Aframax class was laid. Also in September, an agreement was signed with Samsung Heavy Industries on the transfer of competencies in the construction of tankers.
